American Solar Awarded Contract to Install Large Solar-Thermal Roof System at Adelphi MD Army LabAnnandale, VA—American Solar, Inc. (ASI) announced today it has won a contract to install an 11,000-square-foot solar heating roof at the Army Research Lab in Adelphi, MD. This solar roof is the centerpiece of a re-roof and solar heating upgrade for an office building. When completed, the system will be the largest installed solar air-heating roof in the US. The contract, valued at $648,000, involves installing a solar air-heating metal roof on an office building at the Army’s Adelphi campus. American Solar’s system will recover solar-heated air from the roof. The system will deliver the heated air to the building for space heating and pre-heating to reduce the building’s energy use. American Solar and its metal roofing partners will design and install a new metal roof system over the building’s old roof. When sunlight hits the new outer roof, the air in the space between the new and old roofs will heat up to 70 degrees warmer than the outside air temperature. The system will collect the solar-heated air to heat outside air entering the ventilation system and for other heating needs in the building. The company also recently installed large solar air-heating roofs on facilities for The US Department of Health & Human Services in Maryland and Hill Air Force Base in Ogden Utah.
About American Solar Inc. ASI’s systems use the natural heating properties of metal. Sunlight hitting the metal surface heats the surface, which then heats the air under the surface. A small fan moves the solar-heated air through the system for a broad array of uses in buildings, commercial facilities, and agricultural or industrial processes. With these innovative technologies, customers can use solar heat in several new ways. Customers with applications that require year round energy loads and that use high-cost heating sources benefit the most. The company’s customers have included The US Army, The US Air Force, The Pentagon, Dulles Airport, US Geological Survey, US Department of Health and Human Services, National Institutes of Health, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and James Madison University. ###
