American Solar Awarded Contract to Develop Solar Heating System for USDA GreenhouseAnnandale, VA—American Solar Inc. (ASI) announced today the company received a contract to install a solar heating system for the US National Arboretum. The US National Arboretum is a research laboratory of the US Department of Agriculture. The Arboretum operates greenhouses in Maryland to support the research efforts. American Solar will install solar heating systems to provide heat to the greenhouses and to help control the daily temperature swings that put plants at risk during the spring and fall months. The innovative solar heating and solar heat recovery system will use American Solar’s low cost Heater Boards™ to gather solar heat during the day. The system will transfer the collected heat to a ground heat exchanger. The warm ground will then release the heat back into the houses at night, providing a steady flow or warm air. This heated air will keep the air around the plants above 32 degrees F and prevent freezing. The Heater Board System delivered air at 80 degrees F above outside air temperatures. The solar heated air warmed the ground during the day to 55 degrees F and maintained an air supply above 42 degrees F to the house at night, even when the outside air temperature had dropped to 21 degrees F.About American Solar Inc. ASI’s systems use the natural heating properties of metal. Sunlight hitting the metal surface heats the surface, which then heats the air under the surface. A small fan moves the solar-heated air through the system for a broad array of uses in buildings, commercial facilities, and agricultural or industrial processes. With these innovative technologies, customers can use solar heat in several new ways. Customers with applications that require year round energy loads and that use high-cost heating sources benefit the most. The company’s customers have included The Pentagon, Dulles Airport, The Air Force, Health and Human Services, The US Department of Agriculture, National Institutes of Health, the Commonwealth of Virginia, James Madison University and Commercial and Industrial companies. ### For further information, visit American Solar's Web site: www.americansolar.com or contact ASI at 703-425-0923 or by email at info@americansolar.com. |
