American Solar Retrofits Siding for Solar Heat Recovery at US Geological SurveyAnnandale, VA—American Solar Inc. (ASI) announced today the company completed an installation of a solar heat recovery system at the US Geological Survey (USGS) Headquarters in Reston, VA. American Solar deployed its innovative solar heat recovery systems at the Boiler Plant at the USGS. The Solar Heat Recovery System recovers solar heated air from the siding of the boiler plant to help preheat air for the plant and reduce fuel consumption. The initial construction of the building in 1973 covered the building with black metal siding. American Solar conducted tests on the heat generated by the black metal panels. These tests showed that the siding panel temperature exceeded 140 degrees F on an 80 degree day and delivered heated air to the space. The USGS contracted through a Utility Energy Services Contract to have American Solar install solar heat recovery fans and controls, re-engineer the outdoor air intakes and install interior destratification fans in the boiler room. The combination of solar heat and interior heat recovery reduce the need for internal heating of the space and improve boiler efficiency. About American Solar Inc. ASI’s systems use the natural heating properties of metal. Sunlight hitting the metal surface heats the surface, which then heats the air under the surface. A small fan moves the solar-heated air through the system for a broad array of uses in buildings, commercial facilities, and agricultural or industrial processes. With these innovative technologies, customers can use solar heat in several new ways. Customers with applications that require year round energy loads and that use high-cost heating sources benefit the most. The company’s customers have included The Pentagon, Dulles Airport, The Air Force, Health and Human Services, The US Department of Agriculture, National Institutes of Health, the Commonwealth of Virginia, James Madison University and Commercial and Industrial companies. ### For further information, visit American Solar's Web site: www.americansolar.com or contact ASI at 703-425-0923 or by email at info@americansolar.com. |
