American Solar Inc.'s Completed Project Portfolio

Below are summaries of a few projects recently completed by American Solar.

Solar Air Heating Roof for Army Fitness Facility

American Solar recently commissioned the solar air heating roof retrofit at an Army fitness facility at Fort Meade, MD. The solar roof retrofit involved installation of a solar air heating metal roof and air-to-water preheat system.

Solar Air Heating Roof for Army Maintenance Building

American Solar recently commissioned the solar air heating roof retrofit at an Army maintenance facility at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD (APG). The solar roof retrofit involved removal of a failed corrugated concrete roof and installation of a solar air heating metal roof.

Solar Air Heating Roof for Army Office Building

American Solar recently commissioned the solar air heating roof retrofit at an Army Office Building at the Army Research Lab in MD. The solar roof retrofit involved installation of a solar air heating metal roof, outside air preheat of roof top units, air-to-water preheat system for domestic hot water, and a high temperature solar assisted heat pump for VAV reheat.

Radiant Barrier Under Retrofit Metal Roof Creates Solar Air Heating Roof

American Solar recently installed radiant barrier insulation in a previously retrofitted metal roof to create a solar air heating roof. The radiant barrier insulation system reduced the solar heating load on the old roof and building below and created air flow paths for solar heat recovery by air-to-water heating systems.

Solar Thermal Roofing for HHS Lab

American Solar recently completed an award-winning campus-wide solar retrofit for an Health and Human Services (HHS) Lab. The system involved 14 buildings and deployed nearly an acre of solar roofing, siding, and ground mounted systems. The overall system capacity is over 4 million BTU per hour.

Solar Thermal Project for NIH Campus

American Solar completed a campus-wide solar retrofit of several buildings. The overall project was selected for special recognition by the US Department of Energy’s -You Have the Power Campaign.

Large Heat Recovery System Hill AFB

American Solar installed what is probably the largest solar heat recovery system in the US. The system captures solar heat from the existing walls and roof of 2 buildings.

The first building is a six acre medical depot with corrugated brown siding and a light brown metal roof. The solar-heated air is recovered from the siding and roof for space heating and for year round heating of a large paint booth. The total solar roof and wall surface area used for solar heating is approximately 10,000 square feet.

Solar Heat Recovery for Dulles Fire Station

Many buildings at Dulles International Airport, outside Washington, DC, are covered in corrugated metal siding painted a dark “Dulles Gray”. Early tests showed that the siding panel temperature exceeded 100 degrees F on a 40 degree winter day.

Solar Heat Recovery at USGS

The US Geological Survey Headquarters is a one-million square foot laboratory in Northern Virginia. The campus includes several buildings, housing laboratories, computer facilities, and a separate heating and cooling plant. American Solar has installed several ground-mounted emergency generator heating systems, constructed a building with solar heating roof and walls over two large emergency generators, and installed a solar heat recovery system on two metal walls.

Ground-mounted Solar Heat System USDA

The US National Arboretum is a research laboratory of the US Department of Agriculture. The Arboretum operates greenhouses in Maryland to support the research efforts. American Solar installed solar heating systems to provide heat to the greenhouses and help control the daily temperature swings that put plants at risk during the spring and fall months.
