Application Guide for American Solar Thermal Tile System

There are several short payback applications for the American Solar Thermal Tile Systems and Panel. Each application delivers different amounts of energy in different climates and in different uses.

The following tables provide guidance on how best to apply the solar thermal tile system. For the panel system, estimate the energy delivery at 75% of the values listed below.

    Expected Energy Savings
USE BTU Delivered per square foot of solar tiles @ $10 per million BTU energy saved @ $20 per million BTU energy saved @ $30 per million BTU energy saved
Year Round 120 F max delivered temp. 200,000 per year $2.00/sq ft/yr $4.00/sq ft/yr $6.00/sq ft/yr
Year Round With 65 F max delivered temp. 240,000 per year $2.40/sq ft/yr $4.80/sq ft/yr $7.20/sq ft/yr
Seasonal Heating 100,000 per year $1.00/sq ft/yr $2.00/sq ft/yr $3.00/sq ft/yr
Seasonal With Thermal Storage 130,000 per year $1.30/sq ft/yr $2.60/sq ft/yr $3.90/sq ft/yr

Application Type of Heating Energy Displaced Typical Existing Delivered Heating Cost Solar Tile Simple Payback Period
Generator Standby Heat Electric Resistance $15-30/million BTU 2-4 years
Heat Pump Pre-heat Electric Heat Pump & Resistance $6-20/million BTU 5-7 years
Boiler Air Pre-heat Gas, Oil, Propane $8-16/million BTU 3-6 years
Ventilation Pre-heat Gas, Oil, Steam, Propane, Electric Heat Pump and Resistance $8-30/million BTU 4-8 years

Ask about roof top unit preheating, hot water heating, and new solar storage buildings that pay for themselves from the energy dollars you save. Simply buy the heat and we will install the solar roofed storage building for your use.

The Colder the Climate, the More You Save

Everyone knows solar energy produces lots of heat in the desert southwest. What many people don't know is that there is plenty of solar energy available in the colder northern climates. It is in those climates that solar energy can save the most money and repay the investment quickly. It is the combination of heating needs and solar availability that creates the savings.

US Heating Degree Day (HDD) Zone Space Heating Energy Used per Year Space Heating Delivered per Year Typical Cities
> 7,000 HDD 47,300 BTU/occupied sq ft 110,000 BTU/ sq ft of installed tiles Albany, Duluth, Sioux Fall, Cheyenne
5,500-7,000 HDD 48,000 BTU/occupied sq ft 100,000 BTU/ per sq ft of installed tiles Boston, Cleveland, Topeka, Denver
4,000-5,500 HDD 29,000 BTU/occupied sq ft 90,000 BTU/ per sq ft of installed tiles DC, Cincinnati, Wichita, Albuquerque, Seattle
< 4,000 15,900 BTU/occupied sq ft 70,000 BTU/ per sq ft of installed tiles Raleigh, Chattanooga, Tulsa, San Francisco

Note: All values represent what could be expected in generalized areas of the country and for a typical applications. However, each application requires a specific evaluation of the conditions at the site. The values above provide a first estimate of energy and cost savings, when the solar thermal tiles are facing south, with a 50 degree tilt, and delivering energy to typical heating loads.

However, contact American Solar or a solar thermal tile provider to get an assessment of your site to support planning for your project.
